School Funding

School is a topic most people are used to discussing. As college students, you have been attending school since you were just a toddler. Once you got to high school and college, you probably started to miss the days of coloring, arts and crafts, and recess. Those were the good old days where you had no responsibilities and were not being forced to learn for hours on end. As easy as it seemed, elementary school plays a key role in shaping you in to the person you are today. The rules and expectations taught you how to behave and be mature. The arts and crafts developed your fine and large motor skills that you use daily. Everything you did had a purpose behind it, whether you realized it or not.
Funding in schools is absolutely essential in order for students to succeed because it allows teachers to have the resources to teach you more than facts from a textbook. Students need to have materials that help them develop, not only intellectually, but also socially, physically, and emotionally. The early stages of development determine your success level later on in life. If a child does not meet benchmarks and standards for a grade, they will potentially be behind for the rest of their life. Providing schools with proper funding allows them to get the necessary tools to help these students learn to their highest potential.
Funding is also necessary to help develop student’s interests. This video focuses on schools that cut their after school activities, leaving students with nothing to keep them busy after class. An adult speaks through the young boy to explain that when he was young he had big dreams of being an entrepreneur. But when his school cut funding for after school activities, he got involved with violence. After school activities not only give children an outlet to explore their passions, but it also gives them a way to stay off the streets and out of trouble. We need to start pushing for proper funding in ALL districts. If we ignore the low-income schools, we are ignoring children with hopes and dreams for the future.

  1. It has always been amazing to me how our budget for education pales in comparison to our military expenditures. I understand and appreciate the importance of a strong military, but education is also crucial for our nation’s success.

  2. Funding is essential for education. Funding is needed to revamp outdated programs, provide better salaries for teachers, build schools, purchase new books the list goes on and on. I’m appalled that in light of the US’s drop in global education rankings, funding has not increased for education. Education is necessary for children to develop into future leaders and innovators. Education is needed to ensure that every child can read and write. Education is needed to enable children to pursue and explore passions. The benefits of more funding for education far outweigh the negatives in the long run.

  3. I totally agree with the previous points. Yes, our nation has to be protected, but without the education of the younger generations, what is there to protect? The funding by our federal government to school districts has decreased dramatically. Without the education of the youth, there will be no progress in our nation.

  4. I think you guys are all right. I don’t see the use in building our military while the quality of education in this country continues to drop. We need better teachers and better resources in every single school that is lacking. If we don’t fix the problem with our school system, we’ll find ourselves on a slippery slope. When the people of a country don’t have a choice to be well-educated, hundreds of other issues arise.

  5. I am always so torn when it comes to a national budget or funding. There are just so many programs that are so beneficial to all of society, but there is such a severe lack of funding for them all. So how does one choose which programs to fund and which to cut? However, education I believe is a top priority. If children today aren’t given the proper education how can they be expected to prosper and help grow our national economy in the future. It is a huge vicious cycle we live in but one that must be addressed.
